The park is located 1 mile to the west of the Cornish town of St Columb Major, which offers a range of local amenities and facilities, including doctors, shops, butchers, post office, small supermarket and pubs including the Red Lion which provides a fantastic Carvery on Sundays.
Less than 7 miles is the famous National Trust – Carnewas at Bedruthan Steps.
This spectacular stretch of the north Cornwall coast offers views of the dramatic cliffs overlooking Bedruthan Steps, contrasted with the sheltered Porth Mear cove. You can either start your walk at Carnewas or Park Head car parks.
There are a variety of walks to enjoy at Carnewas and in the surrounding area. A short walk at nearby Park Head or a longer trail taking you there along the coast from Carnewas. A circular walk from Porthcothan, a few miles along the coast, heads in the direction of Booby’s Bay and Trevose Head.
Less than 7 miles is the popular town of Newquay with its gorgeous , sandy beaches.
It’s known for sandy Fistral and Watergate Bay beaches, where waves from the Atlantic Ocean create strong surf. On the seafront, the Blue Reef Aquarium features an underwater tunnel going through a coral-reef tank with pufferfish, sharks and rays. Further inland, surrounded by tropical gardens, Newquay Zoo is home to lions, wildebeest and sloths.
About 9 miles north is the charming, traditional English harbour of Padstow.
Padstow is connected via a ferry service to the village of Rock which also has magnificent beaches. At low tide you can access the first of these beaches, known as Chidley Pumps or Lower Beach, from a path off to your right about 2 minutes walk from the town.
Padstow is popular with foodies and walkers alike. The bustling working harbour is surrounded by gift shops, galleries and a whole host of restaurants.
The hamlet of Mawgan Porth is situated in a lush green valley, mid-way between Newquay and Padstow on the North Cornish Coast.
It is in an ideal position for exploring the North Coast of Cornwall. It has the added advantage of being very close to Newquay Airport.
Inland the Vale of Lanherne trail leads for some two miles to the pretty village of St Mawgan where the fourteenth century Parish Church and the Convent of Lanherne are worth a visit. There is village post office and shop with an adjoining tea room serving cream teas. There is an ancient ford here, long supplanted by an old bridge over it. Further on, through Carnanton Woods, is the historic market town of St Columb Major.
The Old Rectory Park has a brook running through it which is home to many brown trout. You will often see pheasants strolling around the park – nature at its very best!
